Do I have to have an internal exam?
(The Elephant on the Page!)
The short answer is no. Absolutely not. An internal pelvic assessment may provide some valuable information regarding the strength and tone of the pelvic floor muscles, but it is not mandatory. In fact, there must be full consent, verbally and physically. If you do consent, you can change your mind at any time. If a person is not 100% comfortable, an internal assessment will never be performed. There is plenty of information that can be gleaned from the history, and other forms of assessment. An internal assessment can be deferred to another session or declined altogether.
